Algeria – Germany

Cooperation of the German Federal Bar and lawyers in Algeria

In Algeria, the German Federal Bar mainly cooperates with the national bar association Union Nationale des Ordres des Avocats (UNOA), though joint events have also been organised with regional bar associations. With 40.000 representatives of the legal profession, Algeria has the largest group of lawyers in the Maghreb states.

The cooperation between the German Federal Bar and the Algerian Bar Association (UNOA) was launched in 2019 and aims to support the professionalisation and modernisation of the legal profession in Algeria. A key focus is on digitalising legal processes and introducing or improving electronic means of communication, so that legal proceedings become more efficient and accessible.

Other important areas include strengthening the professional regulatory framework and lawyers’ duties, as well as promoting good governance within the legal profession. The German Federal Bar brings Germany’s wealth of experience to bear in these consultations — for example, on how lawyers’ self-regulation works and how transparency, independence and professional ethical obligations can be safeguarded.

Another element is the exchange of professional legal expertise, including an international perspective, so that Algerian lawyers can benefit from international developments and standards. The cooperation also promotes networking with German colleagues to share best practices and respond jointly to challenges such as improving access to justice.
