Cooperation with lawyers in Libya

Due to the ongoing domestic political tensions in the country, cooperation with the Libyan Bar Association is requires working under unusual circumstances. As a result, some events are held in neighbouring countries in order to maintain long-term contact with lawyers in Libya.

Since 2019, the German Federal Bar has built and maintained close ties with the national Libyan Bar Association. The aim is to establish a sustainable network between the legal profession of both countries. In recent years, various joint events have taken place some of which have also involved neighbouring countries such as Tunisia, thus taking into account the circumstances in Libya.

A significant step was the first joint event in Tripoli in 2022, attended by around 150 lawyers. Main topics were current issues in professional law, as well as defence rights in national and international criminal law. The event was accompanied by in-depth discussions on the different structures of legal self-governance and the relationships between lawyers and judges in Libya and Germany.

The cooperation sends an important signal regarding international solidarity among lawyers, promotes professional exchange and supports the strengthening of the rule of law in North Africa. The German Federal Bar regards the cultivation and strengthening of this network as an element of building towards the future of professional development and mutual support.
